I listened to the full soundtrack of big fish (except for the songs that weren’t on youtube). Most of them were very catchy and had a really nice feeling. Others i didn’t like so much, such as little lamb from Alabama and Red, white and true. I really enjoyed the songs fight the dragons and I know what you want (The witch). Here are just a few reasons why i liked/dislike those songs and what would make them better to catch the audiences attention.
Lets start off with the songs that i really enjoyed. I know what you want (sung by the witch) is a very good song. It has a “spooky” feeling to it. My favourite part was the chorus. This song is for when Edward and his buddies go to see the witch to see how they die. I really like this song because its like todays music, very “poppy”. This song is mainly about the witch telling Edward how he is going to die because everyone wants to know how their life ends. And that for Edward the way that he dies may not be as exciting as he wants it to be. What i envision on stage for this song is very dark lighting and possibly some mist to make it spooky. And in the background an old, spooky house thats falling apart. My second favourite song is Fight the dragons sung by Edward. This song is about Edward, and that he is not going to change because people tell him to “get a normal job”. This song ties the whole musical together. Edward quotes “i’ll be only thinking of my boy”. When earlier on in the musical Will says that his father is just a stranger to him, but after all their not strangers, Edward was always thinking of his son. Edward says that he will fight a dragon and win a battle just to tell his stories to his son. This whole song is Edward singing about Will. Once again for this song my favourite part is the chorus. On stage what i see for the first bit is Edward sitting at a desk singing about him not having a normal life and he’s dressed in casual clothing. Once the song gets to the chorus Edward then stands up, the desk gets rolled off the stage, and Edward pulls off his normal clothes, underneath would be armour and Edward pretends to fight a dragon. At the end of the chorus young Will, will be rolled onto the stage on a bed and Edward goes over and sits on the bed telling will his stories because at the end of the chorus Edward says “And i am bringing my stories home to you”.
After listening to the whole soundtrack i could only really find two songs that i disliked the most. The first one is Little lamb from Alabama (sung by the Alabama Lambs). I feel like this song is a little “childish” and is a song that i am not interested in. I understand that these girls are singing to get into the circus and that is their act but i feel like making this song more mature would make the audience more interested. Then again i feel like this act is supposed to be a little “childish” just for comedy, because it is a circus act after all. My second least favourite song is Red, White and True (sung by Sandra because she choose to be with Edward). I feel like this song is kind of corny. There is no real bass beat either so it doesn’t feel “up beat”. I feel like to make this song more interesting there could be more lower voices.
Most of the songs in the soundtrack i really enjoyed. These were my top two favourite songs and my my top two least favourite songs. Which songs did you enjoy? Which ones did you not enjoy? Are you like me and think that Little lamb from Alabama may be a little childish? Did you like Fight the dragons?
I love "Fight the Dragons" too! I totally didn't even understand the true meaning of the song until you just summed it up so perfectly for me in your post! I love how you made the connection that it ties the whole musical together, and mentioned the fact that this is a song about how much Edward truly cares for Will, and that he will do anything just to have stories to tell him! Your explanation helped me a lot so thanks for that! :)
ReplyDeleteI love how you described the witch song, I think that smoke and a creepy house will look amazing and the audience will realy believe they are at a witches lair. I totally get what you mean by Alabama lamb song, it does seem very childish but at the same time I think it's like that for a comic relief. You really do have a great way of envision these songs!
ReplyDeleteI also dislike Red, White And True. It's simply not interesting or relatable to me and the chorus of girls sound.. random of sorts? Not a favourite of mine, but I do love Fight the Dragons for it's father-son bond. I think it's a really special song.
ReplyDeleteI really love what you have for Fight the Dragons! The desk and casual clothing turning into a dramatic battle with a dragon then back to Edward telling his son a bed time story is so cool and I think it would look great. Also, we had the same opinions on I Know What You Want! I also envisioned mist and a spooky falling apart house. And I completely agree that Little Lamb From Alabama is childish. I also said it was my least favourite song. Awesome ideas!
